We’re getting a new holiday! You don’t get the day off work, but it’s called National Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day (BRA Day) and it will occur on October 17, with the first one happening this year. The U.S. and 20 other countries are participating in an effort to increase awareness of breast reconstruction procedures for women who have had a mastectomy.
It’s a good idea because according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), about 70 percent of women who have had breast tissue medically removed were not informed about the plastic surgery options available to them. A competent plastic surgeon can do amazing things with breast reconstruction. You can see before and after pictures of patients who have undergone such surgery by Dr. Clark and myself here.
The U.S. spokesperson for the holiday, chosen by ASPS and The Plastic Surgery Foundation (The PSF), is singer-songwriter Jewel. According to ASPS, Jewel is a “breast cancer advocate,” which is probably a poor choice or words, though I think the point that’s trying to be made is clear: she is against breast cancer, not an advocate of the disease, as we all are.
